The Book Surgeon
Every now and then I cross paths with an artist who had refined a process so intense that it blow the cap off my skull. Check out the absolutely incredible sculpted book-work of Brian Dettmer. It may take you a few moments to orient yourself but once you do you will see one of the most implausibly crafted works of art created from existing material you have ever seen. The process is described quite simply. A book is chosen, nothing is added and only chunks of pages are removed. Once Mr. Dettmer finds an interesting illustration or design element he will meticulously cut around the object and continue to dig deeper like an archaeologist searching for the rest of a dinosaur skeleton after carefully uncovering a piece of the ribcage. I’m over describing when you should really just be checking this dudes work out. Enjoy.

Drowning Beautiful

WOW. I have nothing else to say.
That is so incredible… I’m at a loss for words.
Blows the lid off my brain is right ’cause I sure can’t wrap my brain around these!
For some reason, his relationship with books reminds me of this artist, Lew French, who has a “relationship” with rocks in such a way that he weans beautiful sculptures/fireplaces out of the rocks. In French’s case, he puts rocks together- or unites them – while Dettmer takes away aspects of the books to reveal the art. Have you ever seen this guy? Check him out…..
What a fascinating process! The cuts are so precise.

Absolutely superb. If you need an agent, ring me and we can talk. These are fine.
Best regards, Chele
Man,……Brian Dettmer captured the whole point of books and their true meaning,…..man…..I’m an artist myself, you simply made me speechless and (tear) xD. I appreciate all of your artwork!!! Superb, phenomenal, amazing!
I’d love to also have a piece of your artwork too. How did you get those cuts so clean and precise?
I have never seen anything quite like this.
These books seem to breathe.
The time, and meticulous detail that these surely must have taken…
The patience.
Each cut, and layer perfectly placed.
Fingers cramping during
this finely fragile process.
An awe inspired intake of breath
child like sense of wonder
at the birds the words
the peeking mice
and mechanics that all may come to life
at different angles.
Any tree that may have been martyred for this cause
was well worth the loss.
